Making A Homemade Mask For Covid19

As of April 3, 2020, the CDC and other agencies announced that it is possible to spread or received the coronavirus (Covid19) by simple conversation as the "droplets" of an infected/carrier/Asymptomatic person may become airborne. However, it is NOT a known way of transmission, do not panic over this. But as a result of this though, the agency is telling us for OUR protection or to bolster our own personal protection, that we may use a mask of a woven nature (i.e. like cotton). This can help us. Please see the guidelines below:

From the CDC

• A DIY mask, while not as effective as an N95 mask, still offers some protection from respiratory droplets that spread the virus.
• Fabric that is 100% cotton is comparable to surgical masks & shows effectiveness.
• If you can’t make your own mask, the CDC suggests covering your mouth and nose with a scarf or bandanna.

• These masks aren’t going to fully protect you from coronavirus. You should still be practicing social distancing by staying at least 6 feet away from others in public and frequently washing your hands for 20 seconds each time.
**********

I am practicing social distance here in my home, So using what I had on-hand I was able to create a fashionable homemade mask using hair ties and bandanas.

Bandana Mask

This is a no-sew mask. It is an easy to make no-sew option. It took exactly 3 minutes from start to finish. *It is recommended that you wash the bandana between uses so that you can make sure it is always clean before you leave your safe environment.

I gathered what I had on-hand

Hair elastics, and three bandanas. This craft does call for LARGE elastics (I had only medium sizes). I think the large will work for a man as I think the medium elastics would pull and tug on the ear. They will be too small for many. Also, I think other types of scarfs or material may be needed as my bandana is 20" x 20".

I found out that the regular sizes I have seen for bandanas are Oversized 27" x 27", Standard 22" x 22", and Child-sized is 18" x 18". Who knew?

Step one

gathered things hair elastics and bandanas

Step two

Layout the bandana and choose favorite hairband.

Step three

Once flat, you'll begin to fold I used approx 3" width.
You can adjust this to how thick you want and the width of the coverage area.

Step four

You'll have a tube, like this. (my bandanas are very old and wrinkled).

Step 5

Put one hair elastic on each side of the folded bandana.

Using the large hair elastics will have fabric laying flat (less cinched) *Remember I only have medium sized hair elastics on-hand.

Step 6

Simply fold the left side toward the middle. Then repeat with the right side. When they meet, stick the right side into the left side. It will stay in place with NO sewing

Step 7

This is the finished mask, Ready to wear.

Selfie Finished product.

Be Well. Stay safe. Have compassion for your neighbors and friends and family. Share all that you can. We are all in this together. Remember to wash your hands, and treat all your surfaces in your home.
