HANGOVER!
OVER INDULGENCE

What is it?

A hangover can be described as various types of physical symptoms and psychological effects from the overconsumption of partaking in drinking alcohol.  It can be caused by beer, wine, or spirits. The effects can last for several hours or up to and past twenty-four full hours.

Symptoms

The symptoms can include a laundry list of things, but the main list (not limited to) can be complete fatigue, headache, rapid heartbeats, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, weakness, dizziness, "bed spins", depression, irritability, can't sleep, and sensitive to light and sound.

***Please note heavy drinking and binge drinking Can cause/otherwise induce alcohol poisoning!  The person will be far worse than the symptoms listed above*** Please call your emergency services if you suspect this! It could be deadly. Better to always be safe than sorry.

How to prevent this

The only way to prevent a hangover is to not indulge in the first place!  Refrain from drinking.

Some facts:

Don't drink on an empty stomach
Do NOT mix drugs with alcohol, this can be fatal
Stay away from dark-colored drinks; they tend to be stronger and contain a higher content of alcohol.
Please remember family history of alcoholism also puts one at risk.

Prevention

Some ideas that are fact-based in science to help you if you do partake in drinking:

*Eat before and all during the time you are consuming drinks. This will help to coat and keep your stomach full and you will drink less.

*Sip water in between your drinks. This will keep you hydrated and full as well. You will drink less alcohol.

*Know your limits!  Stay within your moderation range, and do not go past it. Stop drinking when you have had your limit.

*Drink very slowly. Do not gulp down your drinks. Stay within the 1 drink per hour or an hour and one half. (1-1 1/2) This helps you pace it out and you will be consuming way fewer drinks.

Cures

Is there really any? Except for not drinking?  Oh well here's a list of tried and true things that will help alleviate symptoms, but it isn't really a cure.

Again, make sure you drink water. (also your dehydration may cause more bed spins once you drink a lot of water the next day)

Drink fruit juice for an alternative. Be aware that they contain lots of sugar and may not actually rehydrate you. Be aware that things like citrus can aggravate an already upset stomach.

It is an old wives' tale that you take "the hair of the dog that bit you" people claim it works, but do not drink MORE alcohol this does not work!

Eat Something, again, it is an old wives' tale to eat a greasy cheeseburger! You have an upset stomach and a myriad of acids in there, you might want to opt for something calm and stomach-soothing, such as toast or simple crackers or bouillion to replace salt and potassium in your system.

Go Back to bed. This is a great way to help you get past the hangover~ get more rest.

Oral electrolytes solution does and can help. The above pictured is a product that is marketed to children, but adults have been using it. It will help with electrolyte imbalance and dehydration, low blood sugar, but this will NOT help with stomach upset and nausea. Things like "Gatorade" drinks will help you but only in a pinch, they add tons of sugar and you get way fewer electrolytes.

Have fun tonight and always~ Ring in the New Year responsibly and be safe! Please always have a responsible designated driver. DO NOT drink and drive. Happy New year 2020.
