Protecting Your Aging Skin
Did you know that our human skin is widely considered the largest organ of the human body? Our skin functions as a multi-layered protective barrier against things like pathogens, heat, and injury. Our skin also helps us regulate our body temperature. That's some real fantastic stuff. As my "aging in place journey" continues, I'm still a true influencer and I still test and review many many skin care products through agencies and companies that seek out my real and true reviews for my (our) age group on Instagram and Facebook. There truly are a great many products that realize the a large population of aged people are looking for answers to keeping their skin hydrated, supple and free from "crepey-skin". Our beauty really is skin deep. Unfortunately when I was a child and teen we spent hours in the sun, we were swimming, boating, skiing and of course we were trying so hard for the ultimate bronze tan, all of that with no SPF whatsoever! Who knew that this mistreatment of ourselves would cost us in our latter years.
So here's some important information I have gathered on my little skin care journey:
Our skin changes after the age of 65 years old. Our skin needs TLC for real. Did you know older skin is prone to skin cracking and flaking? Did you know that even the act of showering too often, or in too hot of water can be highly damaging? After 65 years old our natural oil production drops, and our protective barrier gets thinner. Hydration naturally goes away rapidly. Our aging skin becomes fragile; while other factors can play into this too like medications, physiology, rapid weight changes, sun damage and loss of collegen and elasticity. That's alot. So here's a simple guide to follow: Don't take hot showers, this strips away our body's protective sebum, while we still produce some~ what little we have we must try to preserve. So most dermatologists suggest if you're over 65 years old Take a full body shower only 2-3 times per week. But what about all the sweat, bacteria and dead skin on those other days? They suggest making sure handwashing/sink washing/sponge baths be done on the off shower days. You know the important drill, armpits, groin, ladies... under breasts, and between toes. These are warm areas and are the most prone to bacteria, fungus and rashes. Use a gentle cleanser and warm water with a soft wash cloth. Using gentle pats to dry and being gentle and not super vigorous and making double sure any folds of skin and body are dry when done.
Final Words:
If you're over 65 years old, our aging skin needs a mix of 2-3 warm never hot showers, and then targeted handwashing in between, tuned into your personal lifestyle and your overall comfort. Always seek out products that are sensitive in nature, read the labels. Apply a great moisturizer when done. Use a good sunscreen with an SPF of at least 50. Always treat yourself gracefully, if you're unsteady on your feet please use non-slip mats, or shower chairs.
Enjoy this sweet daffodil that says hello by my front door everyday.
